Preoperative Checklist: What You Need to Know Before Surgery
1. How should I prepare for my foot and ankle surgery?
- Follow all preoperative instructions provided by Dr. Iossi.
- Refer to your preoperative letter from Dr. Iossi’s surgery scheduler including::
- Date and location
- Medications to stop
- Post op appointment time, date
- Work related form completion
2. What will my mobility be after surgery?
- Weight bearing restrictions are common after foot/ankle surgery.
- The following can be helpful to aid mobility while not putting weight on the healing part of the foot/ankle
- Crutches, walker, knee scooter, iwalk
- If you need equipment, call Dr. Iossi’s office at least 1-2 weeks prior to surgery for the appropriate order. Knee scooters are often not covered by insurance and can be purchased through Amazon or medical supply stores
- Prehab: a visit with physical therapy prior to your planned surgery can be helpful in practicing mobility with the weight bearing restrictions and assistive devices.
3. Will I need a temporary handicap parking permit?
- As mobility is often limited post-surgery, you may be eligible for a temporary handicap parking permit.
- Request a form from our office to submit to the DMV.
4. How do I care for my splint or cast?
- Keep your splint or cast dry and clean at all times.
- Use a waterproof cover for showering (ie Amazon, Walgreens)
- Do not insert objects inside the cast to scratch or adjust padding.
- Contact our office if you experience increased pain, swelling, or numbness.
5. When can I return to work?
- Your return-to-work timeline depends on the type of surgery and your job duties.
- Office jobs may allow for earlier return with modifications, while physically demanding jobs may require more recovery time.
- Discuss work restrictions with Dr. Iossi and complete any required medical forms in advance.
- Forms should be dropped off at our office or faxed to Milwaukee or New Berlin or Greenfield or emailed to [javascript protected email address] Forms completion process can take 7-14 business days.
- Will need to complete authorization form for completed forms to be released.
6. How do I manage pain after surgery?
- Follow your Dr. Iossi's pain management plan, including prescribed medications.
- Use ice packs as directed to reduce swelling.
- Keep your foot elevated as much as possible in the first few days.
7. What should I do if I have questions or concerns?
- Contact our office with any concerns before or after surgery.
- Watch for signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or drainage from the surgical site.
